Start with the box footprint
For rectangular cartons, pallet capacity begins with the two-dimensional footprint. Dividing pallet area by box area is only an upper bound because side lengths may leave unusable strips.
Add layer height and payload
Once boxes per layer are known, the number of layers is constrained by total permitted height. Weight can be more restrictive than geometry for dense products.
Why mixed orientation can help
Rows with different 90° orientations can use leftover pallet width or length that a uniform grid cannot fill. PackMize tests mixed best-fit placement as well as simple aligned grids.
