Pallet volume, weight and utilization
Pallet volume is useful for reporting, but it is not a packing algorithm. Real capacity depends on whether rectangular cartons can actually tile the pallet footprint and fit within height and payload limits.
Three utilization measures
Layer utilization compares the total carton footprint area on one layer with the usable pallet footprint. Volume utilization compares packed carton volume with the rectangular pallet loading envelope. Payload utilization compares cargo weight with the allowed cargo payload.
Why CBM alone can be wrong
Two shipments can have the same total cubic volume but different pallet capacity. A carton that leaves narrow unusable strips on the pallet footprint may have materially lower practical utilization even when the volume ratio looks high.
Gross pallet weight
Gross weight = cargo weight + pallet tare. Payload capacity normally limits cargo, not the combined gross figure, so the exact interpretation of a pallet specification should be checked before operational use.
Use utilization diagnostically
A low layer utilization points to footprint mismatch. A low volume utilization can indicate vertical slack or footprint gaps. A payload utilization near 100% means weight, not geometry, is the active constraint.
