40 ft High Cube Box Capacity Calculator

Estimate physical carton capacity in a 40 ft High Cube from rectangular geometry, not just nominal CBM. Door feasibility, orientation and payload are included in the planning model.

By PackMize · Published

Quick answer: For 600 × 400 × 300 mm cartons at 10 kg each, the current PackMize 40 ft High Cube preset returns 970 cartons, 9700 kg cargo and 91.47% geometric space utilization. Status: BEST SOLUTION FOUND.

Why 40 ft High Cube capacity is not one fixed carton count

“40 ft High Cube” names an equipment family, not one universal internal box. Internal width, height, door opening, tare and payload vary by manufacturer and equipment series. PackMize therefore treats its preset as a planning profile and provides a custom-container mode for actual equipment specifications.

Worked example: 600 × 400 × 300 mm cartons

PackMize evaluates permitted three-dimensional carton orientations as stacks of strong two-dimensional layer patterns. The result is deliberately not labelled globally optimal because the engine has not proved that no better arrangement exists.

CBM says more than the geometry can actually fit

Each carton is 0.072 m³. Dividing the preset nominal 76.3 m³ by carton volume gives a volume-only floor of 1059 cartons, but the deterministic packing result is 970. The difference is the practical cost of rectangular fit, layer fragmentation and the actual internal dimensions.

Use custom dimensions for an operational load

Before booking or loading, replace the preset with the equipment specification for the actual container series. Also validate weight distribution, securing, dangerous-goods rules, forklift/loading access and any carrier requirements outside this single-SKU geometric model.

Assumptions and data sources

PackMize separates published reference data from planning assumptions. Always replace a preset with the specification of the pallet, container, sheet or stock you will actually use when operational accuracy matters.

Frequently asked questions

Are all 40 ft High Cube containers exactly the same inside?

No. Manufacturer and equipment-series differences can change inside dimensions, door opening and payload. Use the actual equipment specification when available.

Does PackMize include the container door?

Yes. The single-SKU engine checks whether the selected carton orientation can pass through the configured door opening.

Is 970 a guaranteed global maximum?

No. For this example PackMize reports BEST SOLUTION FOUND. It does not claim global optimality unless the proof condition is met.
